Seven Pillars of Health
Getting cancer was a wake-up call. Here are a few lessons I took from the ordeal.
Getting diagnosed, going through the treatment ordeal, and coming out on the other side gives me a chance to change my lifestyle the very best way I can to prevent reoccurrence and promote health in general, not only for myself but also for my family and, hopefully, whoever chooses to hear me out. I researched the heck out of books, articles, blog entries about how best to achieve these goals, and I am putting it out there for you to check out. Let’s get healthier, let’s ward off disease, let’s thrive together!
When we are on the road of life, we don’t know what the future has in store for us. Even if it seems like the road is straight and simple, our goals defined and our strategies to get there set in motion, we cannot and don’t know what really lies ahead. A sharp curve, a steep hill, or an insurmountable mountain?
The same is with health. What is it? Is it just the absence of illness? Is it most broadly a sense of physical, emotional, and social wellbeing? Is it something we realize we possess only when it is compromised or gone? According to the World Health Organization, health means “a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.” So, how to achieve it?
Proper nutrition might be the most crucial pillar of health and wellness. Unhealthy diet contributes to approximately 678,000 deaths each year in the U.S., due to nutrition- and obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.HydrationWater is life, and there is no life without water. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water and this water needs to be replenish regularly for optimal health. Physical Activity
The best mix of physical activity would involve a combination of strength training, low and high intensity cardio exercise, and stretching, but what’s most important is finding and sticking to something that you enjoy.SleepThe importance of sleep for our health and wellbeing cannot be underestimated. Sleep provides the foundation for all of our daily habits and decisions. Getting at least seven hours of quality rest each night is essential for optimal health.De-StressStress control is crucial for optimal health, both physical and mental, but it is often overlooked. The fast pace and daily challenges of modern life make stress management necessary for everyone.De-ToxifyWhether healthy or not, you don't want to overload your life with harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients in cosmetics, household cleaners and anything that comes in contact with your body. However, toxins can also manifest in other ways, including in our body and our minds.ConnectSocial connectedness generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional and physical well-being. It will decrease anxiety and depression, and lead instead to higher self-esteem, greater sense of empathy for others, and more positive outlook on life.
