Where to get your DIY ingredients?
I have three places where I get my ingredients.
Mountain Rose Herbs has amazingly pure, organic hydrosols, essential oils, and other DIY ingredients. A bit pricey but very high quality.
Starwest Botanicals sells organic clays, oils, and butters. Great quality and great customer service.
Plant Therapy was the first essential oils company I used and I am still getting many of my ingredients from them. Amazing customer service, a wide selection of essential oils, and lots of kid-safe and pet-safe oils which is an important consideration for parents and pet owners.
What is a hydrosol?
Rosewater – or rose hydrosol – is very soothing to the skin, moisturizing, anti-microbial, and it also smells like a rose garden.
Considered beauty’s magic potion, rosewater in skin products dates back to early Egypt and queen Cleopatra.
Per one of the companies I trust to deliver the best ingredients, Mountain Rose Herbs, hydrosols are pretty amazing.
“Hydrosols, also known as “flower waters,” are produced by distilling fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials. With similar properties to essential oils, these aromatic waters are much less concentrated. Their aromas are often soft and subtle when compared to their essential oil counterpart.”
Mountain Rose Herbs
Since it is both anti-aging and antibacterial, rose hydrosol helps maintain your skin’s PH as well as moisturize. Of course, if you don’t like rose aroma, replace it with lavender, chamomille, or melissa. The possibilities are truly endless.

Witch Hazel comes from the distillation of twigs and the bark of the Witch Hazel tree, and it has wonderful astringent and skin tone balancing benefits.
The little bit of alcohol in the toner helps disperse the optional essential oils properly. This ensures proper dilution and safety to put on facial skin.

Organic Aloe Vera (I get mine from my garden or from Starwest Botanicals), an anti-inflammatory that soothes and naturally moisturizes, and tea tree essential oil, nature’s most powerful antimicrobial.

About our Aloe Vera JuiceTo derive the Aloe inner leaf juice, a traditional process of hand filleting and extracting the valuable inner juice from the aloe leaf is used. Hand filleting requires delicate precision, and is done by skilled craftsmen. Their precision ensures it retains ample amounts of the useful components found in the aloe, and the removal of aloin (decolorizing) and other unwanted substances. It is filtered and processed with activated carbon. This processing technique ensures that the active constituents are preserved in maximum amounts, thus ensuring a high quality product. Contains less than 1% additives. |
The toner already smells divinely with just these three ingredients.
For still more aroma and additional benefits from therapeutic grade essential oils, try to add a few drops of rose or geranium.
True Rose Essential Oil is very expensive.
I opt for Rose Absolute or Geranium Essential Oil instead.

The Recipe
- 1 oz organic Rose Hydrosol
- 1/2 oz organic Witch Hazel
- 1/2 oz organic Aloe Vera
- Optional: 8-10 drops of Rose or Geranium essential oil
Mix everything into a 2 oz glass spray bottle. Spray onto the face after cleansing or throughout the day for extra hydration or to set make-up in place.
This is so simple and truly life-changing. Enjoy!
